575 clubs will benefit from EURO 2012 revenue

575 clubs from around Europe will be given compensation for the release of players for the qualification matches and the final tournament that took place in Poland and Ukraine this summer. The pot of money has been provided because the clubs which contributed to the success of UEFA EURO 2012 and national team football in general, particularly in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 season, should be compensated for doing so.

UEFA have split the €100m pot 60/40, with the majority being reserved for a per-player-per-day payment for the teams who released their players to play in the final tournament. The remaining €40m has been ring-fenced for payments on a per-player basis for each qualifying match that they were released for. This is a substantial increase from EURO 2008, which saw only 180 clubs receive payments for. The target for EURO 2016 is monetary, to increase the pot to €150m.

The top 10 teams who benefit from these compensation payments are as follows:

1) FC Bayern München €3,095,393

2) Real Madrid CF €2,996,585

3) FC Barcelona €2,210,202

4) Manchester City FC €2,069,465

5) Juventus €2,023,012

6) Liverpool FC €1,972,376

7) Chelsea FC €1,913,235

8) Borussia Dortmund €1,845,413

9) Arsenal FC €1,694,470

10) AC Milan €1,429,997

No real surprises in the top 10 earners. All top European teams playing in the world’s most competitive leagues, Germany’s Bundesliga, Spain’s La Liga, England’s Premier League and Italy’s Serie A.

In terms of France, 21 teams will benefit from the money being made available, with the two biggest earners being PSG and Olympique Lyonnais (€954,631 and €731,582 respectively). This is unsurprising given the number of internationalists in both teams.

Commenting on the participation of clubs to the benefits of UEFA EURO 2012, UEFA President Michel Platini said: « I am delighted that we are able to provide clubs with financial benefits from UEFA EURO 2012 to reward their contribution to the competition. We witnessed a truly fantastic UEFA European Football Championship final round this summer, and I am pleased that the clubs can now also be associated with the success of the event. »
